The Great Cookie Debacle

With the EU legislative juggernaut rolling inexorably towards creating legislation for, well, everything, and their penchant for assuming that all EU citizens are complete morons ( although they may have a point about the average computer user ! ), it will come as no surprise that on the 26 May 2011 the legislation regarding websites in Europe setting cookies changed.

During this time of economic distress, one may well speculate as to why any legislation would be introduced that might disadvantage web sites run by European businesses compared to the rest of the world. Indeed, one could be forgiven for more than a fleeting thought about whether this legislation is less about protecting Europeans from themselves, and more about some underhanded collusion to persecute advertising providers like Google™.

That as it may, it appears that having a server in an EU member state could constitute having a physical presence there, and make one liable to that countries legislation. Quite how one is meant to address the complexities of cloud computing with servers all over the world, some of which you may not even know about, is still a mystery, and seems to have been conveniently ignored by Brussels - perhaps the concept is all too hard for them? ......... conscientious webmasters - yes, both of you can sit down now ! - probably need to address this issue sooner rather than later.

So far, the published information relevant to complying with the new legislation is wholly inadequate, contradictory and confusing to say the least. As a result, the operators of the phpCOIN suit of web sites have elected to go with the safest solution for the time being ....... unfortunately it is also the most irritating to the end user !!

So lets get down to it (........and get your thieving hands off my chocolate chip cookies !!! Those are NOT the cookies we are talking about here)
